Head lice are parasitic wingless insects. They live on people's heads and feed on their blood. An adult is called a louse and is about the size of a sesame seed.
The eggs, call nits, are even lesser - almost like a dandruff flake. Lice and nits are easiest to notice at the neckline and at the back the ears.
Head lice (pediculosis capitis) are a common, highly contagious infection that often occurs in nurseries, day care centers, and schools.
It is caused by plague with the human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis, and it is typically very itchy.

Symptoms of Head Lice
1. Intense itching. An allergic response to the saliva that lice inject during feeding may result in itchy red bumps on your scalp, neckline and shoulders. Some people, particularly if this is their first infestation, don't experience itching.
2. Adult lice on scalp. The most widespread spots to find adult lice are behind your ears and along the flipside of your neck. Lice are tiny, about the size of a strawberry seed, but they can be up to 1/8 inch (3 millimeters) in size.

Treatment of Head Lice
For all types of pediculosis, lindane lotion (Kewell or Scalene) is used extensively.
A thin layer is practical to the infected and adjacent hairy areas and then unconcerned after two hours by thorough washing. Remaining nits may be removed with a fine-toothed comb or forceps.
Permethrin 1% cream rinse (Nix), is a topical pediculocide and ovicide for the treatment of head lice and eggs.
It is practical to the scalp and hair and left on for 10 minutes before it is rinsed off with water. Synergized pyrethrins (A-200 Pyrinate, Pyrinyl and Rid) are over-the-oppose products that are functional undiluted until the infested areas are entirely wet.

Home Remedies for Head Lice
1. Prepare a mixture by adding egg yolk, vinegar and lemon juice. Take egg yolk of 2 eggs and add 2-3 tablespoon of vinegar and equivalent amount of lemon juice into it. Mix it well and apply on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 20-30 minutes and then wash it off with warm water. It is also a good home remedy for head lice.
2. Lemon juice is an effectual home remedy for treating head lice and dandruff. Take 1-2 tablespoon lemon juice and garlic paste each and mix them. Apply this combination over the scalp and allow it to dry for 25-30 minutes. Wash your hair in cold water and rinse off the all dirt, dust, etc.
3. Vinegar is also useful in removing head lice. Take 3-4 tablespoon of vinegar, add 2 tablespoon of lemon juice and garlic paste. Mix it well and apply it on the scalp. Allow it to dry for 2 hours and wash it off. Do this 3-4 times a month.
4. Olive oil is also very useful in murder head lice. Apply olive oil on your hair and cover it with a plastic bag. Keep it overnight, later with the help of lice comb take out all the head lice. Repeat this after every 10 days. It is very easy and effectual way to get rid of head lice.
